Today Nathan is 11 months old. It's hard to believe that he will be 1 year old in just 1 month. It's true what they say: time does go faster when you have children.
When you think about it, it's truly amazing how much a child learns in their first year of life. I wonder if any adult learns that much in a year? In the past couple of weeks Nathan has learned to open (and close) doors. When he sees a door he goes straight for it. I'm so worried that he's going to pinch his fingers.
Unfortunately his eating habits have not improved. This summer Nathan was an eating champ. He ate 3 big meals of solids a day. But lately we're lucky to get him to eat even a few bites of food. I had assumed it was a phase that he would outgrow, then I figured that he was getting bored with his meal options (as he only had 2 teeth), now I'm not so sure. We've tried pureed foods, fresh foods, table foods, we even bought some jarred foods for him. No dice. Some days he'll eat great, the next he won't eat at all. Fortunately he gets all of the nutrition he needs from his formula. I did discover this week that if I feed him his breakfast in front of the t.v. I can get him to eat some. Talk about setting a bad precedence!
In the past month we started the hunt for childcare. As much as we would like to delay my return to work for another year, financially I don't think that we can. However, we have discovered the downfall of living close to work: the lack of day care. There are only a few day homes and day cares in our neighbourhood (and the surrounding neighbourhoods too) and they are all full. It's looking more and more like I will have to add about 1 hour (round trip) to my commute to and from work to drive Nathan to day care - or we will have to fork out for a nanny.
I have met with a few day homes but none have felt "right". Most, in my opinion, are trying to care for too many kids (especially kids under the age of 2). The rate isn't important to us if it's the right fit. I just wish that we had more to choose from. I'm having to widen my circle every day to look for care. I did meet with one lady in our neighbourhood, but I'm not going to settle just because the location is right. The good news is that Nathan does seem to enjoy visiting the day homes.
To get him used to the prospect of me leaving him we are going to start going to a playgroup this week. It's held in a day home (way too far to consider for him), so at least he will get used to being around a lot of kids all day. Our house is very quiet and our days are pretty chill and relaxed.
More and more Nathan enjoys his books. Some days he enjoys being read to, others he enjoys playing with the books, and others he enjoys chewing on them! I hope that we can instill a love for reading in him like both Jason and I have. I remember going to the bookmobile with my Dad every couple of weeks to get new books and it was always so much fun! Right now Nathan's favourite books are: Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb; Hop On Pop; and an alphabet picture book. He likes to flip the pages until he finds both the "C"at photo and the "K"itten photo!
