We Broke Our Baby!

Nathan incurred his first injury last night.  Nathan's a pretty tough kid, but he's also got a Kamikaze streak (he goes down the stairs head first) so I had expected a number of bumps and bruises as he learned to walk, but this was a wound that required a visit to the hospital!

I can't tell you for sure what happened as I was in the kitchen and I heard a crash, followed by a scream, and moments later Jason swearing.  Nathan was pulling up on the side of the futon and either let go, or lost his balance, and fell backwards hitting his head on something that should not have been on the floor.  Like most head wounds it bled profusely (we actually used a diaper insert to stop the bleeding).

Thankfully we live close to the children's hospital, and how busy could the ER be on a Sunday night?  Pretty busy it turns out.  They got us past triage pretty fast - the triage nurse put some numbing gel on Nathan's cut and wrapped his head in a bandage.  But we had a very long wait ahead of us.

They have the waiting room divided into 2 areas: for injuries & for illness.  However, since both Nathan & I have a cough with a cold we had to wait in the illness area, with all of the kids with fever & flu (I hope they kept their germs to themselves).  I'm glad I grabbed a bottle and extra diapers before we left.

After waiting 4 hours we finally saw the doctor.  He had a heck of a time trying to take the bandage off our squirmy boy!  It was around that point that he decided that there was no way he'd be able to stitch his head without putting him under.  Thankfully the cut wasn't too deep and instead he was able to glue it together.

So Nathan had to endure another traumatic experience: being held down by a nurse, while getting his head glued, and his parents didn't do anything to help him!

So we got home by 1 am.  Nathan got some clean PJs on and had a bottle and fell asleep.  Mom, on the other hand, wasn't able to sleep until after 3 am.  It was a long night for all of us.
